Who is Your Anaesthetist? Your Anaesthetist is a specialist doctor who has undergone several years of both general and specialist training. All Anaesthetists have completed a medical university degree, following which, they will have worked a minimum of 2 years as a general hospital medical practitioner before entering into specialty training. The anaesthesia specialty training program in Australia takes 5 years in duration and is overseen by the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). Only once this training (including further examinations) has been successfully completed can a doctor be referred to as a Specialist Anaesthetist.
