Dr Ian Chao is a Melbourne based Consultant Anaesthetist. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Melbourne in 2003 and received his Fellowship in Anaesthesia from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2013. During his Final Anaesthesia College exam, he received a Merit Award for outstanding performance, awarded to the top performing Anaesthetists throughout Australasia during that year.
Dr Chao has public appointments as a visiting specialist anaesthetist at the Austin and Box Hill Hospitals. He is heavily involved in teaching and training of medical and nursing staff, and regularly instructs at multidisciplinary simulation training at Eastern Health. He is a qualified instructor for the Australian Resuscitation Council for Advanced Life Support Courses, teaching medical and nursing staff how to resuscitate critically ill patients and those in cardiac arrest. In 2014, Dr Chao further completed a Graduate Diploma in Perioperative Medicine at Monash University. He anesthetises across a range of surgical subspecialties throughout Melbourne, and has special clinical interests in Regional Anaesthesia, Day Surgery, Obstetric Anaesthesia, complex surgical cases, and management of the critically unwell. He provides regular after hours on-call emergency anaesthesia services at Box Hill and Mitcham Hospital.
Dr Chao is also involved in research within Anaesthesia, and in 2016 was awarded the Robert Bulley Eastern Health Surgical Research Grant for his work with the use of 3D Printing within Anaesthesia Education.
